When to use this template
This visualization makes obvious the overall shape, spread, and central tendency of a single quantitative variable across a set of distinct entities. It helps an analyst quickly identify common value ranges, detect outliers, and understand if values are clustered, skewed, or uniformly distributed. An analyst would reach for this to gain an initial understanding of a metric's underlying pattern.
- A single quantitative variable for distribution analysis.
- Data where each row represents a distinct, comparable entity (e.g., states, regions, products).
- A moderate to large number of entities (e.g., 20+) to form meaningful bins.
- Data where the absolute values of the metric are relevant for binning.
- No more than one primary categorical grouping dimension (e.g., geographic unit).
- Static datasets or snapshots of time-series data at a specific point.
