When to use this template
Contour plots effectively reveal regions of high or low concentration, gradients, and overall shape of a three-dimensional surface projected onto a two-dimensional plane. Analysts use them to identify hotspots, cold spots, ridges, and valleys, making patterns in continuous data immediately apparent for spatial or density analysis.
- Datasets with three continuous numerical variables (X, Y, Z).
- X and Y representing spatial coordinates or independent variables.
- Z representing a continuous dependent variable like density, intensity, or magnitude.
- Data where interpolation between points is meaningful for surface representation.
- Large point clouds where individual markers would obscure overall trends.
- Gridded or irregularly sampled data that can be gridded for surface generation.
