When to use this template
This visualization clearly shows the total accumulation of a metric over time, as well as the contribution of different categories to that total. An analyst would use it to understand growth trends, identify periods of accelerated or decelerated accumulation, and compare the relative impact of various components on the overall sum. It's particularly effective for tracking progress towards a goal or monitoring resource consumption over extended periods.
- Time-series data with a clear chronological order.
- Multiple categorical series contributing to a single total.
- Quantitative values that are additive and non-negative.
- Data where the cumulative sum or running total is meaningful.
- Datasets with a consistent reporting cadence (e.g., daily, monthly, yearly).
- Moderate number of categories (typically 2-8) to maintain readability.
